A Tradition of Academic Excellence

  A Tradition of Academic Excellence

Garden Homes Lutheran School (GHLS) is a K3 - 8th grade elementary school that participates in the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program. GHLS sits on the edge of Garden Homes Historic District, our nation's first municipally sponsored, community owned housing project, now a part of the City of Milwaukee. The original school building was constructed in 1954 and has been actively serving the community for the last 61 years.  Our new school building, opened in the fall of 2004, enabled us to expand our enrollment as part of the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program. Our old school, across Roosevelt Drive from our current campus, is the home of the Light House Youth Center, a Lutheran-Christian ministry for youth from 5th grade through high school.

GHLS seeks to educate the whole child: mind, body, and soul, within a loving, supportive school culture of high expectations and no excuses. GHLS is driven to maintain an organized, safe, and caring school culture that allows students to thrive in an educational environment. Without this, character cannot be developed and nurtured in our students, nor can an academic growth mindset be fostered. This is why our teachers are expected to be well-rounded role models that impact the children through 1) strong, yet sensible academic rigor and 2) a steady growth in the knowledge of the Bible, understanding the importance of the Law and Gospel, as well as the grace, and forgiveness of sins provided by God and made possible through Jesus Christ.

Our student body of 250 children (K3-8) is nurtured by a loving and qualified staff of thirteen teachers and three administrators, all holding undergraduate and/or graduate degrees in education.  Several Educational Assistants (EA) are also employed to assist teachers and students.  Classroom size averages between 20 and 27 students. Our curriculum provides a complete complement of courses for students that excel as well as those who struggle. Special education and Title 1 services provide additional support for students who need a little extra.

GHLS is owned and operated by Garden Homes Lutheran Church (GHLC).  Both GHLS and GHLC are members of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), headquartered in Pewaukee, but with churches and schools all over the United States and in several other countries.  The WELS school system is the 4th largest private/parochial school system in America.  GHLS was first accredited in 2007 by Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod School Accreditation (WELSSA) and the National Council on Private School Education (NCPSE). In 2014, GHLS was re-accredited through the same agency meeting 244 of the 248 objectives, resulting in a 98% passing score that provided us with an exemplary accreditation status. We have been a Milwaukee Parental Choice school since 2001, and are listed in the Great Schools Directory for the State of Wisconsin.

GHLS is affiliated with Lighthouse Youth Center. Lighthouse occupies our old school building across Atkinson as their Garden Homes Campus. At Lighthouse, students will be able to safely work on homework and have recreational time with peers and adults in a Christ-centered environment. Students in grades 5-12 can attend Lighthouse Youth Center after school. During the Summer, Lighthouse remains open and extends their program hours. Learn more about Lighthouse Youth Center by viewing their website or contacting Chuqee Fletcher, the site director at chuqee.fletcher@lighthouseyouthcenter.com.
